How Tukie's Laundry Soap Came To Be

I first considered the idea of Tukie's homemade laundry detergent when a friend made hers while I was visiting their house many years ago in Africa and I’ve been experimenting with recipes ever since… these versions are an updated take on the original creation.

The original creation was made and sold in the liquid form in 5 gallon buckets. While lugging these buckets around throughout our store, which was not an easy task, it occurred to me that I should break down the recipe to make just one-gallon containers. After lugging around hundreds of one-gallon containers, it occurred to me to just package the dry ingredients and let the customer add the water at home. Brilliant, huh? LOL

There were several tweaks that took place with these soap recipes after many years of making it. I now feel confident that the recipes have achieved perfection.

The Savings Add Up Fast From Store Bought

Americans do a lot of laundry - about eight loads a week on average. Using store bought detergent adds up. If you'd rather save money, try making your own detergent - it's a fun, easy project, and your laundry will cost a lot less per load.

This is THE BEST homemade laundry detergent. It's super affordable, extremely gentle on sensitive skin, and HE washer safe. This recipe is not like the other recipes you've seen, it was developed over time with many tests until a perfect detergent emerged!

dollar signs saving money

Buying laundry detergent can put a big dent in any budget, and making your own is one way where you save the Washingtons.

One gallon = 128 ounces.

Do the math with the store-bought laundry soaps. Many containers are only 64 ounces, which is ½ gallon, and the average price is about $7.00. That equals $14 for one gallon! Yep, $14 of your hard-earned dollars.

For Tukie's, the price is as low as $4.75 for one gallon of finished laundry soap.
